    Carlisia and Stefan -

    This is definitely something we want to support. We are working on a new public facing template that will allow you to customize all strings.

    Once we have that released we will go back through the admin interface and prepare it for localization as well.

    Carlisia - what is the exact problem you are havinv with comments? Is it the captcha?

    Carlisia and Stefan-

    We now have a new templating system that will give you complete control over all of the strings in your ScreenSteps Live site. This only affects spaces, not the admin area yet.

    You can see how to update to the new templating system here:

    NEW: Activating the New ScreenSteps Live 2011 Template

    If you are using the Zendesk custom template you will also need to update that. All you really need to do is change the ScreenSteps Layout and ScreenSteps Zendesk CSS file references.

    ?name=media_1291523530785.png

    Add these two refernces in:
    <link href='/stylesheets/screensteps-site-layout.css' media='screen' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css' />
    <link href="/stylesheets/screensteps-live-zendesk.css" media="screen" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"/>

    Remove the references to the old layout and ScreenSteps Live Zendesk css files.

    Let us know how the new templating system works for you.

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Greg,

    that's great news :-) thanks a lot, I'll test this over the weekend

    Stefan

    PS: in the post at NEW: Activating the New ScreenSteps Live 2010 Template the top link is not linking to what it says (the blog entry), but to the post itself, had to manually copy the text to arrive at the blog

    Hi

    adding my custom template to the space didn't really give a pleasant sight - is there a place with a new custom template that works with the 2010 template (or is it called the 2011 template, in the post mentioned above you call it 2010, while in the popup it is called 2011) ?

    Thanks,

    Stefan

    Stefan -

    Thanks for letting me know about the mistakes. Got them updated. We have updated the Zendesk custom template instructions to point to the new example template for you to download. The only thing that got changed was the <head> section. When I was updating our template I had to make sure that I removed references to the old ScreenSteps css files or it messed things up.

    Let me know if that works for you. I am going to be flying out to Dreamforce in San Francisco today so I may not be able to respond right away if you have questions.

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Greg,

    I saw that you have a new template called Live 2011 that let's us translate the strings. That's awesome because I can now translate the private spaces as well. However... the template requires a screen with high resolution to be seen well. 80% of my customers have a very low res screen, so I cannot use it.

    If there was the legacy template (or any template that would be of the same width) with the hability to translate the string it would be awesome.

    Thanks!

    Setting the width to a smaller setting is just a matter of including some custom css. I will prep some later today that will make the layout fit in the old layout's width.

    If you are still going to be using the Zendesk template then just use this custom css:

    div#screensteps-content-wrapper { min-width: 910px; }

    That will still allow the template to be liquid (expand and contract). If you want it to stay at a fixed width then use the css:

    div#screensteps-content-wrapper { width: 910px; }

    Let us know if you have any issues.

    Hi Greg,

    This space is private, so I can't use the Zendesk template.

    Hmm.. I gave it a try anyway. It worked! It is still private and not using the Zendesk template, but the width is now the same as before. I'm getting the feedback that it is much easier to read with this template in smaller monitors, so it is a winner! Great!

    Now.. I have zero css skills, so maybe it is just a matter of a css tweek, but this is what would make it better:

    - if it was centered it would be better. As it is, if I have a bigger monitor, there is way too much blank space on the right: https://skitch.com/carlisia/rfrca/prefeitura-manual-da-prefeitura-v-1.0-criando-conteudo-para-uma-pagina

    - if the boxes for topic and tag navigation were smaller, as in the legacy template, it would be much better. As it is, when I open the page even in my huge monitor, the section for the tags are not visible unless I scroll. My users would probably not see that.

    Now, I tried setting my public manuals, the ones that do use the zendesk template, but they appeared majorly broken, I reverted to the legacy template. I would also use this new template with the public manuals that use the zendesk custom template.

    Thank you!

    Did you use the min-width version or the width version. I would suggest the min-width. Then it will still look good on larger monitors.

    For your Zendesk template, did you update your Zendesk custom template with the css files per the instructions above in this post? You need to reference new css files for the new template to work with Zendesk.

    For the sidebar - I would ask your users what they prefer. We made the Topics larger to help users browse main content areas more easily. Our tags list was getting far too long so in our space we pulled it out (that is an option now). If you do want it smaller then I can give you some css that will do the trick.

    Greg... great!!!! I used the width before. Changed it to the min, and it's perfect!

    I get what you are saying about the sidebar. I'm starting to see that it is much better this way. Not a big deal, but if you could give me the css to make the tags section smaller it would be helpful. This way, they will be there, which I want, and more of them will show. But it is great that you made the topics look the way they do now. My users are loving the new layout.

    One request: the "prev" and "next" labels are not included in the list of fields to rename.

    One request for future consideration: don't know how many of your user base actually need to change the strings (for me is a must due to the localization need). For those of us who need to, it would be good to have an option to save different versions, if anything just so if I go back and forth between layouts, when I get back to the one I changed the strings my changes would still be there. As it is, my changes are gone and I have to re-input them.

    I am going to read above (I totally missed it) and fix up my public zendesk version.

    This is a great change! Thanks.

    Ah... duh question for the day? Where would I add those references for the zendesk tamplate? I wasn't the one who did it originally, looked around and can't find it. :P

    Ok, got it working. One thing: it seems that after I added text to the description field in the Customize section, I lost the string changes I had made. :(

    Funny, I had the same problem, somehow I lost the first round of string translations, had to enter it once again, but I didn't dare to try out what exactly the trigger was, didn't have the time to enter them a third time ;-)

    :)

    I tell you: I found 2 different triggers: changing the template, and adding text to the description field. Be warned!

    The "last updated" field is great (but not showing on the zendesk template, I thought it was, now it isn't).

    Bug found and fixed. It should be working for you now. Sorry about that. You should be able to switch back and forth between templates and update other settings without overwriting your custom strings.

    Clarisia -

    Use this css to make the tags smaller on the sidebar:

    #screensteps-content-wrapper #screensteps-sidebar .tags ul#tags li a { font-weight: normal; font-size: 11px; padding-top: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px;}

    Regarding Last Updated. That only shows up on lesson pages. I checked a lesson on your Zendesk site and saw it there.

    You can now also update the Next/Prev text.

    Let us know if you need anything else.

    Great! Perfect!

    I had some hickups, but it mostly works. Only one little detail: I have 3 spaces, in 2 of them the string change worked, but on the one named "gestao" it does not.

    Also, I configured this "gestao" space to show comments, but I don't see the comment form.

    Thank you.

    Ah... well, since we are on the topic: it would be great to be able to translate the strings in the login page. I am going to use the API to add users to a private space, but they should see everything in Portuguese, and that would include the login screen. :)

    Carlisia -

    I checked the lessons in your "gestao" space and they are set to not allow comments. I imagine that when you uploaded them you unchecked the box "Allow comments". That is why you aren't seeing comments in that space. You can turn comments on for all of your lesson by following these instructions:

    Mass Editing Lessons in a Manual: Deleting PDFs and Changing Comment Settings for Lessons

    The translation strings should be working or all spaces now.

    As far as the login screen, that situation is a bit more complicated since the login screen is shared across all spaces. I will let you know when we have a solution for it.

    We currently translate our documentation (majority of English articles updated every three weeks) into three foreign languages. In 2015, we are adding three more languages. We desperately need an easier, more efficient way to localize our documentation using SS3. We've had to train linguists on how to use SS3 and it's been a nightmare communicating updates we make to our English documentation to the other linguists. It's very costly, inefficient, and time intensive. There's got to be an easier way.
